Haldex Controller Reset: How to Do It Safely, Step by Step

Mind

A Haldex “reset” is not a factory reset. On VW Group cars it means running the basic settings (also called a pump relearn or adaptation) on the AWD control unit at address 22 with a VAG-capable scan tool. Do it after a part has been replaced or a fault has been cleared, and only once the ABS and electrical side of the car is healthy. Done in the wrong order, it fixes nothing and can leave you with a new problem.

This guide covers what the reset does, what to check first, the procedure, how to confirm it worked, and what it means when the fault code comes straight back.

TL;DR

  • A Haldex reset runs the basic settings on the AWD controller (address 22). It does not restore factory values and it does not repair a failing pump.
  • Clear and fix all ABS faults first, and calibrate the steering angle sensor. Otherwise the AWD module can reject the calibration.
  • The usual pump basic setting is run with VCDS, ODIS or OBDeleven, with the engine and Haldex warm and the engine running. Let it finish without interruption.
  • Check the result on a real road test, not just on a hoist.
  • If a code such as C111204 returns after the relearn, suspect the pump or its power supply rather than repeating the reset.

What a Haldex controller reset actually does

The Haldex controller decides how much torque goes to the rear axle by driving an electric pump that builds pressure in the coupling. Over time it stores adaptation values for that pump and clutch. A “reset” asks the controller to learn those values again.

The professional guidance on the Generation IV system is clear on when to do it: if components have been replaced or a Haldex fault has been cleared, set the basic settings in group 051. That same guidance treats adaptation as a controlled diagnostic operation that relies on a healthy ABS, CAN and electrical environment. It is not a substitute for repairing a fault.

What a Haldex controller reset actually does

There is a caution here from experienced owners. One expert on a VW T6 forum points out that clearing adaptations is not a return to factory settings. It wipes configuration values, and he warns it could cause trouble for the ABS. Treat the reset as a deliberate step with a reason behind it, not a routine button to press whenever the car feels odd.

When a reset is appropriate

  • After replacing the Haldex pump, the control unit or the ECU.
  • After servicing the coupling, including an oil and filter service.
  • After clearing a Haldex fault that has been properly repaired.
  • After work that changes suspension geometry, where the system should be recalibrated. A 4Motion calibration write-up lists servicing the coupling, replacing the module and altering geometry as the usual triggers.

When it is not the answer

  • A warning light that returns within days. That points to a hardware or supply fault.
  • Wheelspin on launch with no stored codes. Check oil condition, filter and pump function first.
  • Any open ABS fault. Fix that first.

What to check before you reset anything

Most failed resets fail because of what was skipped beforehand. Work through this list.

  1. Scan every module, not just address 22. The Gen IV guidance says to repair and clear all ABS faults before attempting basic settings or adaptations.
  2. Calibrate the steering angle sensor. The 4Motion system reads steering angle from the ABS module (address 03). One calibration guide notes that if the sensor is off by even a few degrees, the AWD module may refuse to accept its own calibration.
  3. Check battery and charging voltage. A weak supply can interrupt the pump run and trigger its own fault codes.
  4. Check the fuse and wiring. Look at the Haldex fuse, the pump connector and the earths before you blame software.
  5. Confirm the fluid and filter are right. If you have just serviced the unit, the correct oil level and a fresh filter matter before you prime the pump.
  6. Read and save the existing fault codes. Note them before clearing so you can compare afterwards. Our Haldex fault codes guide lists the main areas and the blink chart.

If the pump itself is in doubt, test it before relearning anything. Our step-by-step pump test starts with the visual checks you should do before powering the pump.

Which tools can run a Haldex reset

For VW and Audi Haldex 4Motion passenger cars, the usual tools are:

Tool What it does for Haldex Typical user
VCDS (Ross-Tech) Address 22 basic settings, output tests, adaptation Independent shops, serious DIYers
ODIS Same calibrations as the factory software Dealers
OBDeleven Pump motor basic setting for relearn DIYers with a phone
Higher-end multi-brand scanners Connect to 22-AWD and run output tests Workshops

This comes from a scan tool application guide from a diagnostics maker, which lists the multi-brand scanners able to reach the AWD control unit. In practice the key question is whether your scanner gives you basic settings and output tests on address 22, not just code reading. Our Haldex diagnostic tools guide goes through examples, and the section on using OBDeleven or VCDS for fault codes and relearn covers the connection side.

A note on the word “Haldex” in the US: it is also a brand name in commercial truck and trailer ABS. That is a different system from the AWD coupling in a Golf R or an Audi S3. This article is about the passenger car AWD controller.

How to run the pump basic setting with VCDS

The sequence below follows the procedure Audi S3 owners describe on a owner forum thread about priming the Haldex. It applies to the common generations, but menus differ slightly by model and software version, so use your tool’s own prompts as the final word.

  1. Warm the car up. Get the engine and the Haldex unit to normal operating temperature.
  2. Leave the engine running. Connect the interface and select 22-AWD.
  3. Open Basic Settings (function 04). Select the pump motor group and press Go. The research on 4Motion lists groups 051, 060 and 061 for pump motor, clutch calibration and pressure accumulator fill.
  4. Let it finish. Do not touch the pedals, do not unplug anything and do not close the screen early.
  5. Close the tool and disconnect the cable.
  6. Switch the engine off for one minute, restart, and drive the car.

The same forum poster suggests repeating the relearn every six months to a year. That is one owner’s habit, not a manufacturer interval, so do not treat it as a service schedule.

Priming after a service on Gen 5 units

On fifth-generation units, workshop notes describe a priming sequence in module 22 AWD: Output Test, Haldex Clutch Actuation, then Close. After that you check or top up the fluid at the fill port before refitting the plug. Output tests generally need ignition on, engine off, brake and handbrake released, as the T6 forum discussion describes for Haldex actuation.

After a part replacement

If you have fitted a new pump or controller, the basic setting is the step that makes the controller learn it. The Gen IV material adds a useful detail: the controller stores its part number, software version, coding and the workshop number that last coded it. So coding and adaptation are separate jobs. Confirm the part number and coding match your car before you start. The correct part for the vehicle matters, which is why we sell by brand and by Haldex generation.

Allow time. One calibration guide puts a full 4Motion calibration, including the steering angle check and a road test, at 30 to 60 minutes.

How to confirm the reset worked

A clean scan is the start, not the finish.

  • Re-scan all modules. No new codes in 22-AWD or ABS.
  • Watch live data. The Gen IV guidance says VCDS, a multimeter or an oscilloscope with an amp clamp can monitor Haldex operation, including measuring controller current at the Haldex fuse and comparing it with VCDS values.
  • Do a proper road test. The same guidance says a raised-hoist test is not a road test and that ABS intervention can occur quickly. It recommends watching pressure and measured values rather than accepting a hoist result as proof of normal operation.
  • Check traction in tight turns and on launch. Front wheelspin in first and second on a wet or loose surface is the classic sign the rear axle is not engaging.
  • Confirm engagement on the car. Our on-car functional tests show how to confirm coupling engagement.

If the fault comes back after the reset

A code that returns right after a relearn is information. It usually means the reset was never the fix.

On fifth-generation units, a code such as C111204 is commonly linked to an internal fault and a damaged pump. Weak supply to the controller can also trigger it. Repeating the relearn again and again will not cure either one.

Work down this order:

  1. Supply. Load-test both 12-volt feeds to the controller under load, not just with a multimeter at rest. A weak feed can look fine on a meter.
  2. Pump. Measure the pump winding and inspect the brushes and commutator, following our bench and on-car pump tests.
  3. Controller. If supply and pump are sound, the controller itself becomes the suspect.
  4. ABS and sensors. Revisit the steering angle sensor and any ABS faults.

If the pump is the problem, you will need a replacement for your generation. See what to buy if the pump needs replacing for how to choose the right one.

Getting the right parts for a reliable reset

A relearn only works as well as the hardware beneath it. Fresh oil, the correct filter and a sound pump let the controller learn clean values. Our view on Haldex resets

We see the same pattern again and again. A car arrives with wheelspin or a Haldex light, someone has already cleared codes and relearned the pump three times, and the real cause is still there.

Our advice is to treat the reset as the last step of a job, not the first. Fix the ABS faults, calibrate the steering angle, check supply voltage, then service the unit properly with the right oil and filter for its generation. Only then run the basic setting.

That is why we put the effort into product detail and generation selection on the site. A pump or kit that matches the unit means the controller learns against the right hardware, and the reset does what it is meant to do. For workshops and fleets, that means fewer comebacks. For DIY owners, it means a job done once.

FAQ

Does a Haldex reset restore factory settings?

No. It clears and relearns adaptation values. An expert on a VW forum warns it is not a return to factory settings and can cause ABS trouble if done carelessly. Do it with a reason, after faults are fixed.

Can I reset the Haldex without VCDS?

You need a tool that can reach address 22 and run basic settings or output tests. OBDeleven supports the pump motor basic setting, and ODIS and several multi-brand workshop scanners can do the same job. A basic code reader will not.

Why does my Haldex fault return after the reset?

Because the cause is still present. On fifth-generation units, code C111204 can point to a damaged pump or to weak controller power. Test the supply and the pump before relearning again.

How long does a Haldex calibration take?

Expect roughly 30 to 60 minutes for a full 4Motion calibration, including the steering angle check and road test. The pump run itself is shorter, and it must not be interrupted.

Should I reset the Haldex after an oil change?

It is common practice to run the pump basic setting after servicing the coupling, and the Gen IV guidance lists replaced components or cleared faults as the trigger. Follow your model’s service procedure and confirm the fluid level first.
